European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
